We regretfully announce that due to work commitments, Dirk Maggs will no longer be attending Eastercon LX.
Dirk Maggs has become universally known as a master of audio theatre, a writer and director who has evolved the BBC Radio Drama into the “Audio Movie” -productions with layers of atmospheric sound and music, recorded and produced with a full cast in Dolby Surround. His most recent audio project has been the new episodes of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which he directed, adapted and co-produced from Douglas Adams’ third, fourth and fifth books in the series.
While much of Dirk’s work is set in the present day, there is a rich vein of science-fiction and superhero productions running through his CV. When asked to come up with BBC Radio 1’s first daily drama, the result was Batman: Knightfall. Reaching No. 1 in the UK spoken word charts, it was followed by adaptations of Judge Dredd, Superman and Spider-Man. In 1996 Independence Day UK was written and directed by Dirk, a “parallel sequel” to the hit movie.
A Hard-Sci-Fi hit came with Voyage, Stephen Baxter’s novel of a NASA Mars Mission which won both the 2002 Sony Bronze Medal for Best Drama and the 1999 Talkie Award for best use of music.
Dirk Maggs is also well known for his work in television and film - directing and sound designing the worldwide hit Mr. Bean animated series and directing early voice sessions for a new Magic Roundabout computer-generated film. The US Museum of Television & Radio in New York have acquired several of his productions for archival.
In his other life Dirk can be found playing drums in various blues bands. He is married with three sons.
